Qurbani 2010

By the grace of Allah (swt), the IIS India Bihar District Operation Qurbani was successfully carried out, Alhamdulillah! Hafez Yusuf Joosub, the IIS representative flew to and on the following day, he was met by the other SA delegation that left earlier on. The group left for Delhi to connect to Patna via a train. Along the way, they faced endless hardship of interrogation by the authorities because their visit coincided with the recent bombings in India. Every roadblock they met was a nightmare as questions after questions were heaped upon them. Nevertheless, the SA team together with members of the Bihar community, commenced with performing Qurbani. Tears of joy greeted the SA delegation because Bihar Village is in the heart of the poorest of the poor in India and it was only befitting to perform this sacred act and distribute the meat there.

It was a meaningful event since thousands of families who consume meat once in a blue moon were afforded the opportunity to help slaughter, pack and distribute to fellow villagers. In other words, the local population was motivated to work along with the IIS so that the real aims and objectives of the Qurbani are achieved and is not merely turned into alms distribution. The high turnout for both the slaughtering and the distribution part was also an indication of the appreciative attitude of our fellow Muslim Brothers and Sisters in Bihar. Furthermore, after slaughtering thousands of sheep and cattle, lots of Duas were made for those who forwarded their Qurbanis there. Although it was extremely tiring, but travelling the bumpy and potholed road for six hours to Bihar Village was a worthwhile experience. The villagers were warm, patient and welcoming and they made us feel like performing the act every year.

The slaughtering carried on for two days and thereafter, the IIS representative left for a visit to Ajmer Shareef before returning to South Africa. The abject poverty experienced by the IIS team in India villages was food for thought that encouraged the team to urge South African Muslims to do more good there. May Allah (swt) bless each and everyone that gave thought and forwarded Qurbani to Bihar. Ameen.
